Snowy owl dies after getting struck in Boston’s O’Neill Tunnel
A snowy owl has died after getting hit by a vehicle in Boston’s O’Neill Tunnel on Wednesday night, officials said.
Officers captured the bird near the Government Center exit and brought it to Tufts Wildlife Clinic at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center for treatment, Massachusetts Environmental Police said in a statement. The owl was “very dull” on admission and had an open wound on its foot, Assistant Director Maureen Murray said in a statement. She said it died a few hours after arriving at the clinic.

New England is seeing a particularly high number of snowy owls this winter.
Snowy owls that fly south to New England seek wide-open places that evoke the Arctic tundra, like salt marshes, large fields, and airports, according to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The birds were causing problems at a Maine airport last month, and they have a history of flocking to Logan International Airport in Boston.
