This poor seal got chomped in half by a great white shark off Cape Cod
Well, here’s why beaches in Chatham were closed Thursday afternoon.
According to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, a seal met its fateful end in the waters north of the Cape Cod town’s Lighthouse Beach, due to the powerful jaws of a great white shark. Researchers spotted and posted photos on social media of the “half seal” floating in Chatham Harbor.

The Chatham-based shark nonprofit reported the shark’s sighting in the harbor at 3:13 p.m. on its Sharktivity App. Local officials subsequently closed nearby beaches.
“We’re just making sure it’s not looking for an additional snack,” Dan Tobin, Chatham’s parks and recreation director, told The Boston Globe.
Unfortunately for the seal, the shark appeared to have had its fill.
