Mayfield was found among a pile of garbage in Dorchester last month.

A cockatoo who was found neglected among the garbage on a Dorchester street is recovering from surgery and will soon be looking for a new home.

The bird, who is now known as Mayfield, was found on July 25 near Norfolk Street, according to the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Boston. She was abandoned in a cage filled with maggots and cockroaches, emaciated and suffering from a serious medical condition, officials said.

Mayfield was rescued from the garbage and received emergency surgery. She’s spent the past few weeks recovering, and soon, she will be well enough to be placed up for adoption, officials said.

The ARL is now seeking the public’s help to find those responsible for abandoning her.

Those who abandoned Mayfield could be found guilty of failing to provide food, drink, shelter, and a sanitary environment for the bird, as well as willfully abandoning her. Such acts constitute felony violations of the state’s anti-cruelty laws, and are punishable by up to seven years in prison, according to the ARL.

“We understand that tough economic conditions also affect pets, but let’s get the word out that the last resort is not throwing your pet away,” the ARL said in a statement. “There are many organizations like the ARL, agencies, and individuals, who can be a dependable resource for families who need help caring for their pet. There are always options, but throwing an animal away is not one of them.”

Officials ask that anyone with information about Mayfield’s former owners contact the ARL Law Enforcement Department at 617-226-5610.
