A small seal pup was rescued from a busy Maine beach and sent back into the water safely Monday morning, according to police.
The seal was found on Wells Beach, near the area of Casino Square. Marine Mammals of Maine, an organization that cares for stranded animals, arrived at the beach and relocated the seal to a calmer area, where it was released back into the ocean.
Wells police have warned beachgoers to avoid interacting with seals on the beach, as law requires people to remain 150 feet away from the seals.
“It is resting on the beach for a reason,” police said in a recent Facebook post. “Often, the mother has gone out to feed and will return in awhile for her baby.”
If an animal on the beach appears to be in distress, officials ask that beachgoers call Marine Mammals of Maine at 800-532-9551.
