MSPCA receives more than $50,000 in donations to help dog who chewed off his own foot

Maverick, a 2-year-old German Shepherd, tried to free himself by chewing off part of his foot after being left tied up for days.
Donors across the country sent more than $50,000 to provide a German Shepherd who tried to escape a leash by chewing off his foot with a successful surgery that will allow him to walk again, according to a release from MSPCA-Angell.
The 2-year-old dog, Maverick, was rescued in Middleborough earlier this month by MSPCA officials. They estimate that his owner had left him tied up for days or even weeks, and said the tether had twisted around his leg.
MSPCA-Angell, which conducted Maverick’s surgery Wednesday, solicited donations to cover the $5,000 price tag. In total, the center received $57,000 from donors across all 50 states, according to the release. The remaining $52,000 will be placed in Spike’s Fund, which helps to cover medical care for the thousands of animals who pass through MSPCA’s Boston adoption center each year.

Maverick received surgery to repair his back foot Wednesday.
“We must realize that Maverick is one story on one day and that the stream of animals coming in and needing care never ends,” the release said. “His legacy will live on in through hundreds of animals whose medical needs will be addressed before they too go to new homes.”
Maverick’s former owner, Kevin Kennedy, faces charges of felony animal cruelty for neglect and failure to pursue necessary veterinary care, officials said.
Over the next two weeks, Maverick will recover before he’s made available for adoption. Already, more than 1,000 people have called and emailed the center inquiring about adopting Maverick.
MSPCA-Angell ask that anyone interested in Maverick stop by the center before Saturday to complete an application.
