Here are all the things people think the New Hampshire ‘zombie dog’ might be
To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, nothing in this world is certain except for death, taxes—and local residents reaching for some mythical creature to explain what an unidentified animal in a single-frame photo could be.
From Loch Ness to New Jersey to Mobile, Alabama, it’s a cultural tradition as old as any other.
The most recent installment comes from Merrimack, New Hampshire, where police spotted a ghostly, four-legged animal wandering through a local cemetery.

“It’s most likely a coyote,” police wrote.
But also, maybe not!
Given the graveyard setting, the first guess offered by one Facebook commenter was “zombie dog.”
Contributing to the un-dead theme, another commenter suggested “roadkill that got up and walked away.”
“Chupacabra,” exclaimed more, referring to the mostly-North American urban legend, which literally translates to “goat-sucker” in Spanish, known for attacking farm animals.
“Reindeer,” theorized a NECN reporter, probably in jest.
Other guesses ranged from “a really tiny moose” to a red fox with a skin disease to a rabid or malnourished dog.
“It’s a kangahyenadeeracote,” said another commenter. “Kangaroo, hyena, deer, coyote mix. Prove me wrong.”
Whatever it is, police said Tuesday to leave it alone.
But also, maybe keep your goats penned in for a few days, just in case.
