The two bear cubs that were stranded after their mother was electrocuted in Gardner are “doing great and eating well,” according to a Facebook post by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.

State environmental police, the Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, and Gardner police and fire responded to the area of Betty Spring Road Monday and discovered the mother bear had died after being electrocuted by a nearby high voltage wire. Her cubs remained in a tree adjacent to the wire, police said.

The rescued cubs were transported Tuesday to New Hampshire’s Kilham Bear Rehabilitation Center, which specializes in the rehabilitation of black bears. The cubs will remain at the facility for a year, after which they will be released into the wild, according to the post.
