Two Northern fur seal pups are making Mystic Aquarium their forever home.

The pups, described as “about the size of a loaf of ciabatta bread,” arrived at the Connecticut aquarium April 28 and are being cared for by the Aquatic Animal Study Center team. They’re undergoing “enrichment sessions,” like vocalization exercises, to help them acclimate to their new home.

The two pups, currently named Pup XCu31 and Pup XCu32, were deemed non-releasable after becoming stranded in California. They will later be introduced into the Pacific Northwest Exhibit to join fellow fur seal rescues Ziggy Star and Sam.

There are currently eight Northern fur seals, which are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, in human care in the U.S.
