New Nova Scotia ferry operator hasn’t found a vessel yet

It’s been two months since the former ferry operator was cut loose for its high costs.

Almost two months ago, the Nova Scotian government cut ties with Nova Star Cruises, the costly operator of a ferry that traveled between Maine and Nova Scotia.

In its place, Nova Scotia tentatively awarded Bay Ferries Ltd. the rights to that tourist route.

But Bay Ferries hasn’t yet been able to find a vessel to travel the route, the Portland Press-Herald reports, and so the contract for the route hasn’t been finalized.

It’s another chapter in what has become a drawn-out process of finding a company to operate the Nova Scotia-Maine route, which the Canadian government sees as vital to its local economy.

Two seasons of underwhelming attendance and unexpectedly high costs led the Nova Scotian government to cancel Nova Star Cruises as the ferry operator of choice. Officials seized its vessel, the Nova Star, in a Portland shipyard in late October, and the ship’s owner was ordered to pay back hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid debt.
