Hi Meredith,
Three months ago I met a man without even searching for him. We connected almost immediately and began dating shortly thereafter. Everything was pretty much perfect for the first six weeks — so perfect that we actually discussed a potential future down the road, including children.
Then he gets a call from an ex-girlfriend. They had been broken up for a while but remained friends. During their last two encounters, they had sex. He claims that she came onto him and he didn’t stop it.
My worst relationship fear came true — she announced that she was pregnant with his child, conceived about one week before he and I met. Just my luck! He stated immediately that he wanted to be with me, not her.
I pondered the situation and deliberated for hours on end as to what I should do. Everyone was telling me to run far away. I decided to stay with him as I saw something incredible in this guy and was willing to stand by his side and support him.
Lately, we have been having some issues as he is under an enormous amount of stress and has been emotionally unavailable. We have decided to take a break and give our relationship some thought.
If I really care about his man and am willing to accept his child into our lives, is it to my benefit to continue on with the break and see what happens? Or should I run far, far away?
– Timing IS Everything
This situation could work. We have some celebrity proof, right? But it would take a great deal of effort and commitment on both sides to keep this going. You would have to accept that you’re not his first priority. And he would have to be devoted enough to get to know you while he’s learning how to be a dad. The fact that you’re already on a break suggests that he might not be willing to do that kind of work.
Figure out why he really wants the break and then decide whether you both have it in you to take on this struggle together. Because it would be a real struggle. And again, you’ve already been pushed aside.
Readers? Is this worth pursuing? After just three months? What about the break?
