We’re Not Exclusive

Thanks for the chat yesterday.

Q.

I’ve been seeing a guy since February. He says that he is my boyfriend and that he loves me, and we spend a lot of time together. He stays at my house about three nights a week and we go on dates. I am very in love with him.

The problem is that he dates other women and does not want to be exclusive. I have actually seen him out with other women and broken up with him, but then he shows up and tells me how much he loves me and says he’s just not ready to be in a monogamous relationship. I love him so much and always take him back. He treats me like a princess, but I can’t help but always have it in the back of my mind that he still dates other women. I really don’t want to break up, but this hurts so bad.

Something tells me that breaking up with your “boyfriend” of nine months would hurt less than seeing him on a date with another woman. You’re spending too much time worrying about what he does when he’s not with you, and he’s made it clear that this won’t get better anytime soon.

You say he treats you like a princess, but it sounds like you’d rather be treated like a partner. If you want exclusivity and you’re not finding it with him, go look for it elsewhere.

Readers? Should she stay with him? If she gives him an ultimatum, will he drop the other women? Does he get points for honesty?
