He Told A Stupid Lie

Q.

Hello Meredith,

Long time reader finally looking to get some advice. My boyfriend and I have been together for almost two years. The beginning of our relationship was rocky (my fault). I had recently ended a relationship and he was looking to jump right into one with me. I got scared and ran, not being ready for any sort of commitment. A month or so went by and I realized I missed him and wanted to make things work. I reached out to him not knowing what to expect, but we ended up getting back together.

When we got back together he told me that he wasn’t with anyone else while we were broken up. I didn’t ask, he volunteered this information; I personally didn’t care to know what he did while we weren’t together. He recently slipped and confessed that he had been with two other women while we weren’t together.

I was obviously upset to hear that he was with other people, when from the beginning he had voluntarily told me there was no one else. I’m more upset about the fact that he made me believe the lie for almost two years. If he voluntarily lied to my face about something so stupid and not important … what other things could he possibly be hiding/lying about? He tells me that he was scared I’d run again so he didn’t want to tell me, but I told him from day one that honesty is huge for me.

Where do I go from here?

It was a very stupid lie. Unnecessary and stupid. But is it possible that he learned a lesson from this? Does he understand that he did a weird, bad, and unnecessary thing?

If he seems to understand that he made a mistake, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt. The beginning of your relationship was strange and turbulent, and it sounds like he was doing whatever he could to make you stay.

If there were a pattern of lies here, I’d worry, but this seems pretty isolated (despite the fact that you signed your letter with “lies,” plural). Instead of focusing on what he did, think about whether he gets it. If he does, it’s possible that this experience will bring you closer as a couple.

Readers? Is this one lie of many? Is it forgivable? How can she let it go?
