He Hasn’t Opened My Snap

Q.

Meredith,

I have been seeing this guy for about four months and we have gone out on a few dates and have had sex more than once. I am in my mid-20s and he is a few years older. We have lots of chemistry, make each other laugh, and it’s just really fun being with him. He seemed really into me, and we would text every other day, or sometimes five days in between texts, but that was OK and normal for us.

During these few months, we both have gone on weekend trips to visit family or for vacation and remained in contact by text. He just got back from a trip abroad and we weren’t in contact during that time, besides viewing each other’s Snapchats. Last week he replied to a snap I sent to him directly and we chatted like usual for two days. Then I didn’t respond to his last message because it wasn’t a question and didn’t require a response.

Now it’s been a week and he hasn’t contacted me at all. He hasn’t opened another snap I sent to him a few days ago, but because I can still see his snap score and it hasn’t gone up, I know he hasn’t been using the app. This information is easily accessible, so I’m not vigorously searching for this. I do know he has a big deadline coming up, but it’s not for another week and he hasn’t brought that up to me himself. I’ve also been busy with family and work. Should I take this as him distancing himself from me and move on? I really like him and would like to see him again.

A.

There are so many ways to communicate these days, and yet somehow people say so much less.

Sorry. That was an “old man yells at cloud” thing to say, but when I start hearing about unreturned snaps, I want to yell at everybody.

It’s time for you to contact him (you may call or text – no snaps) and ask him if and when he’d like to see you again. Do not make any assumptions about what he might want before you reach out. If he responds, great. If not, that’s an answer too.

Also know that you do not have to mirror his behavior when it comes to communication. If you’re waiting days to respond because that’s what he did to you, you’re going to wind up spending more time calculating your next move than getting what you want. The whole point is to see him in real life. Don’t forget the goal.
