Raise a glass to Route 1’s orange dinosaur with Mystic Brewery’s new ale
For more than 50 years, Route 1 Mini Golf’s iconic orange dinosaur stood sentinel by the stretch of Saugus highway. This summer the mini golf location announced they sold the property, dinosaur included, to a developer who plans to convert the lot to apartments and retail space.
Though the fate of the dinosaur is still unknown, Mystic Brewery in Chelsea is honoring the North Shore’s favorite T-rex with a new brew on tap, which launched Wednesday.
“It’s been a cherished landmark for all of us growing up, and we wanted to honor this goofy looking, cartoonish dinosaur. We thought a big flavored, double IPA was the best way to do it,’’ Mystic’s sales and marketing manager Louie Berceli told Boston.com.

The brewery described the strong ale as, “a Juicy double IPA commemorating Route 1’s silent guardian,’’ according to their website.
“It’s super fruity. It starts with juicy peach notes, followed by citrusy lime and blood orange flavors. There’s also a hint of tamarind and finishes with a piney, grassy bitterness,’’ Berceli said.
The beer is currently available in the Chelsea taproom. Berceli said they will release the draft to their distributors on Monday, and bottles are expected to be available by the end of the month.
The Orange Dinosaur IPA is a limited release. Like the dinosaur itself, extinction is guaranteed.
“We have only brewed a very limited amount so when it’s gone, it’s gone, and we expect it to go pretty fast,’’ he said.
