One of America’s oldest and most beloved pizzerias is finally arriving in Boston.

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, a family-owned Neapolitan-style pizza restaurant in New Haven, has won rave reviews from critics across the nation for its famed brick oven pies, with some even calling it the best pizza in America.

Founded by Italian immigrant Frank Pepe in 1925 (one year before Regina Pizzeria first opened its doors in the North End), Pepe’s is set to finally serve up slices at its new location at the Chestnut Hill Mall December 16, according to The Boston Globe.

Pepe’s initially announced it would open in Brookline’s Washington Square in 2014, replacing The Fireplace. But the deal fell through that fall when Fireplace owner Jim Solomon decided to remain open.

After a long delay, Boston-area pizza lovers will finally get to see what makes Frank Pepe’s so special, from its signature white clam pie to its Italian-imported tomato, cheese, and olive oil.

“It’s just the combination of everything. We still adhere to my grandfather’s recipe,’’ says co-owner Gary Bimonte, whose grandfather, Frank Pepe, an Italian immigrant, started the business in 1925. “You get this crunchy burnt flavor, you get the char, and the crust is crunchy and chewy at the same time. You get a symphony in your mouth,’’ he says.
