This New England diner’s Custard French Toast earned it a Food Network #1 title
It was named as the best diner dish in the country.
There are many, many diners in the United States. But you needn’t travel far for the best diner dish in the country. It’s right in New England at Rhode Island’s Modern Diner, according to the Food Network.
The Food Network show Top 5 Restaurants named Modern Diner’s Custard French Toast as the best diner dish in the country. The breakfast delicacy comes topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, sliced kiwi, house-candied pecans, and raspberry syrup—and is best followed with a nap, probably.

Two more fun facts: Rhode Island is the birthplace of the diner, and Modern Diner in Pawtucket is the first diner in the country to be accepted on the National Register for Historic Places, according to their website.
Modern Diner owner Nick Demou opened the eatery 28 years ago with his father. As it turns out, the Custard French Toast started as a fluke. According to the Food Network, 15 years ago, Nick had made too much vanilla pudding, so he thinned it down and served it as a custard on top of thick-cut French toast.
