Luxor Cafe, an Egyptian coffee shop and deli that opened last year in Harvard Square, is extending its hours this month in observance of Ramadan.
The family-owned business in Cambridge told WBZ NewsRadio that it’s common for restaurants in predominantly Muslim countries to shift hours or open later because of Ramadan, an Islamic holy month marked by prayer, reflection, and fasting. The rules of fasting during Ramadan last from dusk to sunset every day.
Owner Abdelrahman Hassan told the local outlet that they wanted Luxor Cafe to be a place Muslims could come after evening prayer service at area mosques.
“A lot of people living here, they kind of long for that thing they miss at home. We’re just trying to be that space for them,” he said.
The bakery and cafe will stay open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday through Ramadan, which ends March 29. Opening hours are also extended to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 p.m. Sunday. Orders for food should be placed at least 30 minutes before closing.
Luxor Cafe also has some Ramadan specials during the holy month, including Dubai chocolate crepes and Egyptian fava beans.
