Not even the coronavirus can stand in the way of Chic Chick, Allston’s newest restaurant that will open with Hainanese chicken and rice on Tuesday.
Hainanese chicken and rice can be found throughout Southeast Asia, though it’s most commonly known as one of Singapore’s national dishes. As a reflection of the current economic climate, the opening menu at Chic Chick is sparse: three main entrées, plus a handful of add-ons like extra jasmine rice, chicken soup, or garlic ginger sauce. Each entrée ($9.95 to $11.95) features poached chicken with either jasmine white rice or organic brown rice, as well as sweet soy sauce, garlic ginger sauce, ginger scallion sauce, and chicken soup.
“We plan to add more menu items after two weeks, and then a full menu with freshly brewed teas after the lockdown finishes,” Jingjing Zhang, owner of Chic Chick, shared in an email. “Our limited opening menu will focus mainly on poached chicken thigh and breast as the protein options. We will be expanding the menu to include more choices, like grilled chicken and crispy fried chicken as protein options. Our focus is really to get our signature items out there to the public.”
Zhang had originally planned to open Chic Chick at 164 Brighton Ave. in early April; COVID-19, of course, delayed that opening.
“It is not easy to open our restaurant during this time because of the economic downturn,” Zhang said. “Fewer people are going out of their homes. The student population of Boston, normally overflowing in Allston, now seems to be a fraction of what it was. We believe Boston is going through a tough time, but we will be stronger together if we keep supporting each other in the community.”
Chic Chick will eventually offer 12 seats for a sit-down dining experience. For now, though, takeout and delivery (through Chowbus, DoorDash, Grubhub, Ricepo, and Uber Eats) are available beginning Tuesday.
