Do Boston’s iconic dishes still live up to their hype?

They’re the dishes on every ‘must-try’ list for Boston visitors. The ones that inspire lines that snake around the block, the ones that entire nights are planned around. They’re the dishes that you’ve been hearing about for years — but are they still the ones we should be paying attention to?

Every city has a list of iconic bites that are meant to define its dining scene; in Boston, these edible powerhouses include the lobster roll at Neptune Oyster, pizza from Regina Pizzeria, and Boston cream pie from the Omni Parker House. They’re supposed to represent our city’s history, palate, and culinary excellence.

Right? Or are the hour-long wait times and high price tags not worth all the fuss? Are there other iterations we should be paying attention to instead?

To find out whether our city’s most talked-about dishes are still worthy of the hype, I’m taking another look at these oft-praised beacons of Boston dining. But first, I need to know which bites — and sips, for that matter — you’re curious about. Where is the (presumed) burger to end all burgers? The bowl of ramen that you’re always hearing about? The cannoli that prompts lengthy debates? The espresso martini with a devoted following?
