Australian-inspired café Bluestone Lane will open its first Boston location on Friday
Harvard Square has a new breakfast spot.
A New York-based café chain with Australian roots will debut its first Boston outpost in a storied Harvard Square location.
On Nov. 8 at 7 a.m., Bluestone Lane is set to open within the former Crema Café, which shuttered in December after ten years. The coffee chain operates dozens of stores across seven U.S. cities, but this will be its first Boston-area expansion, with plans to open an additional location in downtown Boston in the near future.

Bluestone Lane was founded in Manhattan in 2013 by Melbourne native Nick Stone, who wanted to bring Australian coffee culture stateside. He previously told Boston.com, “We’ve had a lot of interest from locals who have visited our New York cafés, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring a touch of Australian café culture to our Boston mates.”
Bluestone’s 27 Brattle St. outpost will nod to the company’s Australian foundation with beach prints and a cheerful color scheme, while the space’s original bones — high ceilings, split-level seating, and exposed brick — will remain the same. It will also be the first location to launch Bluestone’s new fall menu, which includes newcomers like the vegetarian big brekkie, lemon ricotta pancakes, autumn salad, and spiced cauli sandwich. Fans of Bluestone will be able to order the usual all-stars as well, like the popular avocado smash with heirloom tomatoes and herbs on multigrain bread. To drink, there will be coffee, tea, and cold-pressed juice, plus a wellness category that includes matcha, golden, and beet lattes.
