Despite the rapid growth of fast food and fast-casual chains in Boston, one cult favorite that has seemed to resist invading every corner of the city is Taco Bell, which, until recently, only had one location in Boston proper. That changed on Friday, when a new Taco Bell location opened in Downtown Crossing.

According to the Boston Globe, Taco Bell opened at noon on Friday, setting up shop in a former Subway location at 74 Summer St. The location is a highly trafficked one, though it is also filled with other fast-casual options that could provide serious competition, like Five Guys, Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Noon Mediterranean.

The home of the Crunchwrap Supreme has dwindled around Massachusetts in recent years. Until last week, a West Roxbury location was the only one within city limits, followed by nearby outposts in Cambridge, Quincy, Everett, and Revere. Many lamented the closing of Boston University’s Taco Bell at the base of Warren Towers in 2008, and its 2017 closing at Northeastern University.

Taco Bell is known for its indulgent creations like the chalupa supreme, cheesy gordita crunch, and MexiMelt, though it has also offered vegetarian items on a not-so-secret secret menu. The company recently revealed that it was rolling out a new vegetarian menu nationwide on Sept. 12, featuring menu items like the black bean Crunchwrap Supreme and a seven-layer burrito.
