A critically acclaimed restaurant debuted a new secret burger this weekend
A local chef known for his specialty burgers is bringing the beef to his second Cambridge restaurant.
Chef Michael Scelfo celebrated the one-year anniversary of “coastally-inspired” Waypoint by debuting a small batch of “secret burgers” this past weekend.

“Need some taste testers tonight @waypointharvard…” Scelfo wrote on Instagram Saturday. “2 dozen of these to sell tonight— who’s in?”
The strategy mirrors Scelfo’s approach at his other restaurant, Alden & Harlow, where only a limited number of burgers are prepared each night, and often sell out early in the dinner hours. On New Year’s Eve 2015, Scelfo offered a super luxurious Alden & Harlow burger that cost $175.
“The hope was really just to have some fun,” Scelfo told Boston.com via email. “When we first opened Waypoint in August of 2016, I felt really good about the fact that we intentionally launched without a burger. Now, as we’re closing in on the restaurant’s first year, it feels like a great time to add one.”
Waypoint’s burger is a 1/2-pound double patty that uses the same meat grind as Alden & Harlow’s (Creekstone Farms Brisket, short rib and beef), and is topped with pickled onions, tomato, Benton’s bacon, cheddar sauce, and tonnato sauce on a celery root and seed bun. Served with fries and pickles, the burger retails for $17.
Scelfo confirmed that the burger would be available nightly, but cautioned that guests who want to try one should come in early, as the burgers are likely to sell out quickly.

The Boston Globe reports that Scelfo also has plans in the works for a third Cambridge restaurant, Longfellow, set to open in Harvard Square at 40 Brattle St. in the space currently occupied by Cafe Algiers.
