Sweetgreen Back Bay has been temporarily shut down for health code violations

The location can re-open following a successful re-inspection.

Sweetgreen’s Back Bay location, at 659 Boylston Street, was closed on Tuesday for multiple health code violations. The popular salad chain racked up 20 violations according to the inspection report, seven of which were classified as a “Critical Foodborne Illness,” the most serious of the three types of infractions. The violations included the lack of an accessible sink for washing hands, keeping foods like salmon, kale, and spinach at the wrong temperatures, the presence of broken containers, and reusing gloves that are meant to be “task specific,” according to the report.“Each and every team member is thoroughly trained in these measures, and we are constantly re-validating that the team is complying with our standards on a shift-by-shift basis,” said Sweetgreen President and COO Karen Kelley, in a statement provided to Boston.com. “We have implemented a new structure and new role within our restaurant operations, the first of which is being deployed today at Back Bay. The team member in this new role, having spent a year training under our chef, will focus specifically on food safety and best-in class culinary practices,” Kelley said in the statement. Stationed on the outskirts of Copley Square, Sweetgreen has established its reputation by focusing on healthy, local, and sustainable salad concoctions. Many of the ingredients are drawn from the nearby Copley Square Farmers Market. The Sweetgreen in Back Bay debuted in 2013 as the first location to open in Massachusetts. The Washington D.C. export now claims five locations in the Boston area and plans to open five more by the end of the year. “We’re working around the clock to get back up and running as soon as humanly possible [in Back Bay],” Kelley said in the statement.
