As the air turns crisp, leaves change, and pumpkins line front steps, one treat seems to capture the flavor of fall in New England: the cider doughnut. Freshly made at local orchards, and best enjoyed after a day of apple picking, these sugar-coated classics are as much part of the autumn experience as fall fairs and foliage.

Readers have told us in years past that the appeal goes beyond taste.

“It brings it all together: the crisp air, the outdoors, the leaves changing color, the apples, fresh cider, warm doughnuts — it’s just typical New England,” farm store manager Lori Stephenson told us in 2023. For many, biting into a warm cider doughnut is as much about tradition and location as it is about sweetness. Across the region, people return every year to pick apples, sip cider, and bring home a dozen doughnuts still warm from the fryer.

“These doughnuts are nostalgia in one bite,” a Boston.com reader wrote of Smolak Farms in North Andover. “We also used to make pit stops for doughnuts on our way to Camp Rotary in Boxford. The doughnuts are amazing, and I still love to get them whenever I can.”

Whether you’re visiting a bustling orchard with family activities and live music or a smaller farmstand where single batches are made outside under a tent, cider doughnuts endure as a New England staple.
