It’s a good time to be a Greater Boston diner in 2025, with exciting and diverse restaurant openings occurring all over the metro area.
Each week, Boston.com will highlight the restaurant openings worth knowing about across the Greater Boston region. Some spots will already be open, while others are set to debut soon or later this year. At least one featured restaurant will always be a bonus item — either a pop-up, a collaboration, or event at area restaurants.

The MAZI Food Group is once again busy with an opening, and this time it’s transforming Barbara Lynch’s former Butcher Shop into a gastropub. Behind the menu is the restaurant group’s executive chef Jesus Preciado, who has produced a shareable food program of American quintessentials with some Irish influence, like deviled eggs, oysters Rockefeller, fish and chips, and classic American cocktails.

A matcha tea cafe is coming to the North End, promising seasonal ingredients mixed into its tea lattes. Expect summer specials that combine matcha and watermelon or its standard menu that focuses on using New England ingredients like Maine blueberries or Vermont maple syrup.

It’s a sort-of homecoming story for owners Shore Gregory and Chef Jeremy Sewall, who used to run the Island Creek Oyster Bar in the space of Kenmore Square that now houses their fifth Row 34. Their menu boasts Row 34 classics like their warm buttered lobster roll, tuna crudo, and a bowl of New England clam chowder with bacon.

Another sushi chef multi-course restaurant has opened in Greater Boston, adding to the recent boom in omakase options. It’s pricey, to be sure, at $300 a person, but chef Tony Cao promises an intimate 18-course meal of appetizers and nigiri.

51 Massachusetts Ave., Back Bay
Only on Mondays through August, Vinal Bakery and its next-door General Store will stay open in the evening to offer burgers and pizzas, made on the Vinal’s English muffins. Get it for takeout, or stay for a while at the General Store, which is also serving beer, wine, and soft-serve ice cream.
Event date: Every Monday in August from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
