Peach Farm is closing — but only temporarily

The Chinatown staple has served hungry late-night diners for decades. Its current owners want to retire, and new owners are taking over.

Peach Farm, a staple in Chinatown that’s fed hungry, late-night diners for decades, is likely closing next week — but it looks like only temporarily, current owners and city filings confirmed.

The Tyler Street restaurant’s owners posted the announcement on social media on Thursday afternoon, stating that this month would “most likely” be their last running Peach Farm after 31 years. In an email, owner Tom Leung told Boston.com he was retiring, and there are now new owners involved who “will continue doing the same concept, and most likely use our name.”

The retirement and new ownership was not mentioned in the Facebook post.

“All good things have come to an end, and this will most likely be the last month of us running Peach Farm Restaurant,” the post said. “We want to send a huge thank you for those who supported us through the ups and downs, especially through the crucial time during COVID. We also want to thank all the people that have worked for us throughout all the years. This is a bittersweet moment for us, but it’s for the best.”

The Leung family took over the restaurant in 1995. Peach Farm outlasted other Chinatown spots lost to development and gentrification and was beloved for its traditional Cantonese cuisine and late-night hours. It was especially a hot spot for restaurant employees and other late-shift workers seeking jumbo crab or vermicelli noodles after midnight.

Some well-known customers included Julia Child, Lydia Shire, and other James Beard award-winning chefs, according to The Boston Globe.

Peach Farm used to stay open until 3 a.m., but its hours changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and those late night hours never returned. Peach Farm’s closing hours are currently 12:30 a.m. daily.

Also a change experienced as a result of COVID was the absence of adored longtime employee, Debbie, who was furloughed. Before the pandemic, Debbie had worked the late-night shift at Peach Farm for nearly two decades.

It isn’t immediately clear when new ownership will open the doors back up at Peach Farm, but the transfer of Peach Farm’s food and beverage licenses was approved earlier this month by the Boston Licensing Board. The new manager is listed as Washan Ching.

During the March 5 meeting, his attorney said Ching is one of four shareholders in the business, a team that used to operate East Ocean Seafood Restaurant in Quincy. The filing also suggests that Ching is keeping the restaurant’s name the same.
