There are at least two ice cream shops in Greater Boston that will melt a marshmallow onto your ice cream cone
Add this to your summer to-do list.
There are a lot of places to get good ice cream in Boston. How does one decide between Amorino, Toscanini’s, or J.P. Licks? You don’t. You go to all of them, plus pay visits to Emack & Bolio’s or Gracie’s Ice Cream, because they’ve incorporated another summer staple into their menus: roasted marshmallows.

It’s not surprising that Emack & Bolio’s added roasted marshmallows to their already-expansive array of super-specialty cones. They already use marshmallow to bind candies and cereals to waffle cones, so roasting it and plopping it on top was a natural progression:

Gracie’s Ice Cream in Somerville, which is a relative newcomer to the Boston area ice cream scene, also offers “marshmallow” cones. They’ve been dipping sugar cones in fluff and roasting them since their store opened in 2014, according to a spokesperson from the company.

Emack & Bolio’s uses something slightly different from marshmallow fluff, according to founder Bob Rook, who was hesitant to give too much information about the recipe behind his masterful cones, lest he give up a secret.

Side perk of these cones: Instagrammable as heck. Rook noted that, though his freak cones have been a menu staple since 1980, Emack & Bolio’s has seen a noticeable uptick in specialty cone sales since the advent of Instagram a few years ago.
For now, marshmallow cones and toppings are currently available at only three Emack & Bolio’s locations in the Boston area: 290 Newbury St. in the Back Bay, 23 White St. in Porter Square, and 100 City Square #3 in Charlestown. Gracie’s Ice Cream’s singular location is at 22 Union Square in Somerville.
