South Boston’s L Street Tavern to be sold to new owners, who will continue ‘neighborhood traditions’
The iconic bar featured in "Good Will Hunting" is changing hands, the owners said in a social media post.
An iconic Southie bar seen in “Good Will Hunting” will be sold next month, according to a social media post.
L Street Tavern owners Jack and Susan Woods announced on the pub’s Instagram account that the business would change hands beginning in March.
“While we will miss sharing the local charm and community spirit of Southie, L Street Tavern will remain under the ownership of the Medico family, and continue its neighborhood traditions,” the post said.
Boston.com reached out for more details about what comes next with new ownership, especially ahead of the busy St. Patrick’s Day festivities in South Boston, but did not hear back in time for publication.

The nostalgic post instead highlighted the last 27 years under the Woods family’s ownership.
“We celebrated sports championships and special occasions. We marched. We sang and went swimming for epic cold water events. We welcomed celebrities and strangers from near and far, and dignitaries from overseas. We celebrated with Irish festivities for a whole Saint Paddy’s Day season. We had a front row seat for some of our favorite love stories, engagements, and even the next generation of babies.”
The pub was famous for being the location of a bar scene in the 1997 film “Good Will Hunting,” the Oscar-winning movie from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It’s also a popular spot during the L Street Brownies’ annual cold water plunge and a go-to watering hole during St. Patrick’s Day.
