Alongside the lobster rolls, the clam chowder, and the steak tips, a cold, crisp beer is a culinary cornerstone of Massachusetts. And, since this is New England, that means hazy, juicy New England IPAs are the name of the game for many breweries in the area. (These will knock you over in the best way possible; prepare accordingly.) The state has a wealth of breweries, from single-location upstarts to world-renowned giants. Here, we’re highlighting four of the top breweries in the state, alongside an interactive map of over 100 reader-voted favorites in Massachusetts.

We’ll say it plainly: Tree House is the best brewery in Massachusetts. Its beers regularly top obsessive user-generated rating lists like BeerAdvocate, and its flagship beer, Julius, is the stuff of hazy, hops-soaked dreams. The brewery doesn’t distribute anywhere other than its own locations, so you won’t be able to grab any of their brews inside any restaurants or local beer shops, but the company runs a seasonal beer garden and smooth to-go operation inside the Prudential Center for easy access for Bostonians. Or, if you’d rather plan out a day trip, pilgrimages to Tree House’s campuses in Tewksbury (book a tee time at the on-site golf course), Deerfield (check out upcoming live music acts), Sandwich (the waterfront view is unbeatable), and, of course, the original Charlton property, add up to a great use of a Saturday.
129 Sturbridge Rd., Charlton

Sam Adams may be the pioneering craft brewery that the rest of the country associates with Boston, but, these days, the excellent Trillium, born on Congress Street in Fort Point in 2013, is the top-seeded Boston brewery in our book. Many of the brews are titled after fun nods to Boston lingo — Storrowed, Bridge Over Duckboat — and you can’t go wrong with choices like the Headroom Double IPA, which packs a hoppy wallop, while the fruit-filled Daily Serving is a reliably great lighter choice. The original Congress Street brewery now includes a moody upstairs cocktail bar that showcases the company’s line of spirits. In Fenway, there’s a small taproom and outdoor beer garden right next to the Time Out Market food hall, and there’s a full-fledged, 500-seat taproom out in Canton.

Over the past ten years, Mighty Squirrel’s rise in the Boston-area beer scene has been undeniable. What started as a brewery geared towards active-minded drinkers has exploded into, well, the most well-recognized squirrel around town. Cofounders Henry Manice and Naveen Pawar struck gold in beers like the flagship Cloud Candy IPA and the equally sought-after Mango Lassi, a thick and tangy sour IPA. The company now includes the original Waltham location, plus sprawling outposts at Arsenal Yards and Fenway (perfect for pre- and post-ball game shenanigans).
411 Waverly Oaks Rd., Waltham

The smallest operation out of the four highlighted here, Lamplighter is a homegrown Cambridge brewery that specializes in funky beers that have garnered a local cult following. For the uninitiated, start with Birds of a Feather — their flagship hazy IPA that is always on the menu — and then explore other options like the tart Margaritatown gose or the seasonal David S. Pumpkins, a pumpkin spice ale that seemingly everyone at the bar was ordering during a recent visit to their Broadway taproom. The brewery maintains two locations in Cambridge: the original Broadway spot and a smaller location in Cambridge Crossing. Plus, take note that from morning to mid-afternoon, the Broadway taproom also runs a cool little coffee shop fueled by Cambridge and Somerville neighbors including Broadsheet Coffee Roasters, Iggy’s, and Forge Baking Co.
