“SNL” returned to the air for the seventh episode of its 51st season on Saturday, Dec. 6, with actor Melissa McCarthy serving as host and Dijon performing as musical guest.
McCarthy, hosting for a sixth time, is unquestionably one of the greatest “SNL” guest hosts of her generation. Besides winning an Emmy for her episode in 2017, McCarthy brought us classic sketches like “Outside the Lines” and her memorable Sean Spicer impression. She even got to play Matt Foley (aka Chris Farley) in the show’s 40th anniversary special.
Saturday’s episode proved that McCarthy is always game for whatever premise she’s given, and she elevated a lot of staid sketches on her own. That said, the episode lacked a breakthrough sketch that you’ll be revisiting for years after the fact. That’s a high bar to clear, but McCarthy has set those expectations thanks to her previous history hosting the show.
