“SNL” returned for the sixth episode of its 50th season on Nov. 9 with host Bill Burr treating the audience to three Boston-adjacent sketches and a healthy (but not overpowering) dose of post-election humor.
The political cold open featured the “SNL” cast pledging their loyalty to president-elect Donald Trump, swearing that despite what he may have heard, they’ve been with him the entire time. James Austin Johnson, who has played Trump since joining the cast in 2021, debuted his “new Trump” impression, a muscle-bound hunk who resembles a Ben Garrison cartoon.
During his opening monologue, Bill Burr mixed in topical political jokes in between non-sequiturs about barefoot airplane passengers and Shaquille O’Neal being in too many commercials.
Viewers were ultimately treated to three Boston-adjacent sketches: An alternate version of “Good Will Hunting,” a Rorschach test for the firemen of BFD’s Engine 8, Ladder 1 in the North End, and a fake commercial for Buffalo Wild Wings featuring Burr playing a “real Patriots fan.”
The sketch is a spiritual sequel to Burr’s fake Sam Adams commercial featuring “real Bostonians” from his 2020 episode, which itself is a follow-up to Casey Affleck’s famed “real Dunkin’ Donuts customer” sketch from 2016. All three sketches feature Day as the same construction worker, and all three end in all-out brawls.
Check out the videos below to see highlights from the latest episode of “SNL,” including a “Good Will Hunting” sketch that’s mostly about barf, a musical number starring Burr and 29 other bald men, and all of the guests visiting Colin Jost and Michael Che at the “Weekend Update” desk.
