John Krasinski, an actor who grew up in Newton, married British actress Emily Blunt in 2010. Since tying the knot, they’ve had two baby girls: Hazel, who’s two and a half, and Violet, who was just born in June.

On Tuesday’s The Late Show, where Krasinski appeared to promote his new movie The Hollars, host Stephen Colbert wondered how Krasinski and Emily Blunt are handling the whole British/American accents thing with their kids.

“She’s English. You’re American. How are you raising the kids?” Colbert asked. “That must be a tough choice.”

“Yeah, so that we don’t have problems with accents, we’re raising them that they can’t speak,” Krasinski joked. “And then at 18, they’ll be like, ‘Surprise! I have a British accent!’ Our oldest kind of sounds like Madonna right now. It’s like a little bit of both.”

Krasinski explained that Hazel says certain words with a British accent, like “can’t” (“caun’t”) and “water” (“woota”).

Hey, at least it’s not a half-Boston accent: “Dada, may I have a wah-tah?”
