Last Week Tonight returned from a month-long hiatus for an episode dedicated to discussing last week’s Republican National Convention. And, naturally, host John Oliver had a lot to say.
Oliver, who is in known opposition of Donald Trump, made the argument that Trump and the RNC spent a lot of time advocating for “feelings over facts.” He provided a montage of several speakers at the RNC who stressed how Americans “feel.” One such person, Oliver said, was Newt Gingrich, who argued on CNN while at the Convention that “liberals have a whole set of statistics, which theoretically may be right, but it’s not where human beings are.”
Oliver responded:
I think we can all agree that candidates can create feelings in people. And what Gingrich is saying is that feelings are as valid as facts. So then, by the transitive property, candidates can create facts. Which is terrifying because that means someone like Donald Trump can essentially create his own reality. And that is the closest thing to an actual magic spell I think I’ve ever seen.
