Seth Meyers has banned Donald Trump from appearing on ‘Late Night’

'Although, to be fair, he wasn’t coming on anyway.'

Late-night talk shows have made for obligatory stops on every presidential candidate’s campaign trail this election cycle. But now, Late Night’s Seth Meyers, who has looked to play to his own strengths as a politically-attuned late night host, has established a rule when it comes to his platform.

After presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump revoked The Washington Post’s media credentials from his campaign, Meyers said in Tuesday night’s monologue that Late Night will not allow Trump to appear as a guest in the future.

“We here at Late Night believe in freedom of the press, and therefore have decided to stand in solidarity with [the Post],” Meyers said. “So as long as The Washington Post is banned from Donald Trump’s campaign, Donald Trump will be banned from ever coming on this show. You missed out, buddy.

“Although, to be fair, he wasn’t coming on anyway,” Meyers noted. “He had no interest in being here.”

Trump responded to Meyers’s ban from Late Night, saying in a statement from his campaign: “[Meyers] has begged me to do the show for the last two years. I have told him emphatically ‘no.’ I only like doing shows with good ratings, which as everybody knows, I only make better (by a lot).”

On Wednesday’s Late Night, the saga continued.

Meyers said in his monologue that he stands by his Trump ban:

Last night, in the wake of Donald Trump pulling the press credentials of The Washington Post, I announced here last night that until he rectified that situation, he was banned from appearing on this show. And we did this, we instituted this ban despite the fact that he’s never been here, asked to be here, or would ever be caught dead here. And I just think that takes an amazing amount of courage on our part. So the ball is in your court, Donald. Either rescind your Washington Post ban or you are not allowed to appear on a show that you have no interest in appearing on. Although, maybe now that you can’t have it, you’re changing your mind.
