Everyone loves a sentimental moment between longtime buddies just catchin’ up and pallin’ around and high-fiving—especially when it’s between Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert.

Carell, a native of Acton who actually owns a general store in Marshfield, appeared Monday night on The Late Show to promote his new movie, The Big Short, about the 2008 financial crisis. It also stars Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, and Christian Bale.

Before Colbert and Carell even got into any movie talk, they reminisced about their days together at The Second City, a comedy club out of Chicago, in the early ’90s. Colbert was apparently Carell’s understudy in a main stage show and had to learn “Anchors Aweigh’’ on the baritone horn in just six days.

“I can no longer hear ‘Anchors Aweigh’ as ‘Anchors Aweigh,’’’ Colbert said to Carell. “I can only hear the bass line. Do you remember it?’’

He sure did.

Later, in the video shown above, after some protests from Carell, the duo sang a nice little duet of “Dance With Me.’’

Ah, look how far they’ve come.
