Mark Ruffalo explains his cringeworthy Spotlight moment with Michael Keaton

It happened during rehearsal.

Mark Ruffalo was really excited to be a part of the new Spotlight film, out Friday. The movie, which follows the Boston Globe reporters who uncovered the clergy sexual abuse scandal, stars some major A-listers, including Birdman and Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton.

And when Ruffalo appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night, he gushed over his fondness for Keaton, explaining, “I literally crapped my pants, I was so nervous working with him.’’

As any normal human would know, with nerves comes foot-in-mouth word vomit, and Ruffalo is no exception to the rule. Luckily for us, Ruffalo survived his awkward encounter with Keaton to tell his tale to Kimmel:

“We were rehearsing, and he said, ‘Hey why don’t you walk me home?’ So I said, ‘Sure, God, it’s Michael Keaton, yeah!’ And we’re walking, and I said, ‘Hey, you know, it’s so amazing this kind of renaissance you’re having right now, it’s really exciting.’ He’s like, ‘What renaissance?’’’

“‘You know, this kind of like — comeback you’re having.’ He’s like, ‘Comeback? I never knew I left.’’’

“I had 10 more blocks with him.’’
