Trevor Noah is self-deprecating (and funny, too) in his first Daily Show monologue
Watch his debut as the Daily Show’s newest chair-holder.

A new Daily Show regime has begun, and Trevor Noah is here to assure you, dear viewer, that he’s oh-so-grateful to be here.
He told audiences this right from the beginning in his debut monologue Tuesday night.
He self-deprecatingly acknowledged some of the questions people have had, such as why a South African is hosting the show rather than an American. (“Once more, a job Americans rejected is now being done by an immigrant,’’ Noah cracked.) And he addressed why the new host is yet another man in a sea of male late-night hosts. (All of the women Comedy Central asked “clearly knew something I didn’t,’’ Noah said.)

Noah also praised the hand that fed him:
“Thank you, Jon. Thank you for believing in me. I’m not quite sure what you saw in me, but I’ll work hard every day to find it. And I’ll make you not look like the crazy old dude who left his inheritance to some random kid in Africa.’’
Trevor Noah didn’t seem totally confident behind the desk, no, but his humble approach wasn’t bad. Someday, maybe, he’ll really own the Daily Show the chair. In the meantime, welcome to late-night, Trevor Noah.
