A generally happy milestone on The Mindy Project ends on a somber note

Why did the arrival of Mindy’s baby have some sad vibes?

How has nine months already gone by in the fictitious and very pregnant world of Mindy Lahiri? Her baby came earlier this season than anyone really suspected, but it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies.

This second episode in The Mindy Project’s new season follows Danny and Mindy’s final moments before the arrival of their baby as they argue about where Mindy will actually give birth. Mindy goes into labor on the subway, but when all is said and done, she ends up in a hospital bed with the newborn and Danny by her side.

They decide on the name Leo, to which Mindy says, “I love it. For Leonardo DiCaprio?’’

“No. Like Leonardo Da Vinci,’’ says Danny. “Or Leo the Lion because this guy is gonna be really strong like his ma.’’

Mindy’s a ma, just like Danny’s ma! She tells little Leo that she loves him, but then Morgan—who is present in this intimate Mindy-Danny scene for some reason—starts sobbing.

Then just like that, Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me’’ cues in, and America’s saddest pop song (OK, OK, saddest pop song at the moment) suddenly taints the entire scene with gloom.

Maybe this scene was meant to be nostalgic in the sense of maintaining that feeling of togetherness in a tender moment.

But either way, the warm and fuzzy excitement just got bombarded by Sam Smith’s melancholy falsetto, and now it’s hard not to feel sad about a cute baby. What gives, Kaling?
