‘Orange is the New Black’ star used to front a punk band

Annie Golden plays the mute Norma Romano on OITNB, but her voice has been famous for years.

When we first heard Norma Romano singing on Orange is the New Black, it was everyone else’s turn to be stunned silent. But it clearly wasn’t actress Annie Golden’s first time at the microphone. You probably heard her before if you’ve seen John Hughes’s classic Sixteen Candles.

Golden plays the magical mute on Orange is the New Black, but her voice had it’s own time in the spotlight. She was the lead singer of The Shirts, a band that headlined legendary punk club CBGB in the ’70s, and her solo song “Hang Up the Phone’’ was featured on the Sixteen Candles soundtrack.

Golden had some great feathered hair back then, too. Maybe Norma should bring that look back.

Norma’s backstory gets attention in Episode 7 of season three, on Netflix now, but unfortunately doesn’t include clips of this 1978 music video for “Tell Me Your Plans.’’
