A ‘Boondock Saints’ TV series is in the works
Say your prayers, Southie: The Boondock Saints, the South Boston vigilantes who graced the silver screen in 1999, could be returning as a television series.
IM Global Television has acquired the rights to the cult film with the intent of creating a television series, according to Deadline.
They’ve tapped Troy Duffy, the writer and director of The Boondock Saints and its 2009 sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, to write the series. Duffy has already written the first episode and a “bible’’ for the entire project, according to the Deadline report.
“For years I’ve been obsessed with telling a real origin story with Boondock, and IM Global TV has stepped up,’’ Duffy told Deadline. “Television is the perfect medium to explore these controversial characters on a much deeper level and to bring Boondock Saints to a whole new audience.’’
Now for the bad news: The series will likely be a prequel to the movies, meaning justice-dispensing brothers Connor and Murphy McManus won’t be played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus (now a fan favorite on AMC’s The Walking Dead). However, according to Deadline, the duo are in preliminary talks to serve as co-executive producers for the show.
Duffy didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.
