When Maggie Smith hinted recently that the sixth season of Downton Abbey would be her last, she apparently wasn’t alone: TVLine reportsthat the upcoming season will be the last for the series.

The show, which is co-produced by the UK’s Carnival Films and Masterpiece, based at Boston’s WGBH, is themost-watched drama in PBS history.

A Masterpiece spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Boston.com.

Though Downton fans will no doubt lament the impending end of the series, they still have eight episodes to enjoy before saying goodbye to Hiclere Castle. The sixth season is set to begin filming in spring 2015.

Following the final wrap, creator Julian Fellowes will head stateside to work on The Gilded Age, an NBC series about the upper echelon of 19th century New York society.

No word yet what Lady Mary and the rest of the Crawley family will do next.
