ABC Orders Put Pilot of 1970s Boston-Based Cop Drama ‘The Broad Squad’

While the Hub was busy being buried by this week’s blizzard, ABC ordered a ‘put pilot’ of a Boston-based female cop procedural for the fall 2015 lineup.

A Boston Globe story from 1978 notes the diversity of the Boston Police Academy’s graduating class.

‘Put pilots,’ as defined by Variety, virtually guarantee that the pilot will be picked up by the network.

The Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (“Gossip Girl’’) project, The Broad Squad, will focus on four female graduates of the Boston Police Academy in 1978, per The Boston Globe.

The show’s title is a direct reference to the nickname given to the graduates by local press, Deadline reported in 2014.

A January 17, 1978 story (right) from The Boston Globe archives states that of the 60 new police graduates that year, 30 were minorities, including six black females, one Hispanic female, and seven white females.

The show, which Variety called Broad Squad, will be executive produced by Schwartz and Savage alongside Len Goldstein (Hart of Dixie) and Aaron Kaplan (Chasing Life).

The scripts will be left to Bess Wohl, a Harvard graduate who most recently wrote the Broadway play American Hero, which premiered in March 2014.
