BDC Now: Jim Carrey Channels His Inner McConaughey on ‘SNL’

Jim Carrey never got a spot as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live,’’ so he always makes it count when they have him on as a host. He did just that on Saturday with a little pretend advertising work for Lincoln. See the ads on today’s BDC Now, and read more about Mindy Kaling’s fake Nobel Prize, the happy marriage of a GoPro and booze, zombies versus wildlife, and the US Army going cyber.

Lincoln Just Got Some Free Advertising

Matthew McConaughey’s commercials for Lincoln are absurd enough on their own, but leave it to Jim Carrey to take them to a new level. During his stint as host of “Saturday Night Live’’ over the weekend, Carrey took McConaughey’s place behind the wheel of a Lincoln and did what a comedian known for literally talking out of his own butt is supposed to do. He rolled boogers, drove around with Keenan Thompson on the hood of his car, and apparently stole somebody’s kids. It sounds crazy, but the best part about these spoof ads is that Lincoln could probably roll them out alongside the real ones and no one would know the difference.

Act, Write, Bring Peace to Earth – Mindy Kaling Can Do it All

When people get older, it’s easy to get confused. But one man is going to have to come up with a better excuse than his old age for how he confused comedian Mindy Kaling for Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. The mix up apparently came at a VIP party at the Top of the Standard in New York City. The New York Times was with her and said “a tipsy man in his 80s cornered her,’’ congratulated her on her Nobel Prize, and said she had “recovered well from Taliban gunshots.’’ Kaling told the Times she wondered why Yousafzai would be at a VIP party at the Top of the Standard, and we’re equally curious. Either that old man was seriously confused or he has a very bizarre sense of humor.

Zombies Fall Pretty Low on the Food Chain

The National Wildlife Federation’s stated goal of “protecting wildlife and wild places for our children’s future,’’ is noble, but not very exciting. Until now. The NWF just rolled out “Zombies vs Wildlife,’’ a video feature that explores the ways in which the Animal Kingdom is fully prepared to quash a budding zombie apocalypse. The videos have been brief (less than 45 seconds, each), somewhat entertaining, and unintentionally terrifying. Because while naturalist David Mizejewski is explaining how bears and vultures are perfectly built to take down zombies, all we were thinking was how consuming zombie flesh will almost certainly lead to those animals being “zombified’’ as well. Zombie humans are bad enough, but thanks NWF – we’re glad to know that zombie bears and vultures are basically inevitable.

War is Going Online

If the rise of drones wasn’t an obvious indication, war seems to be becoming less about the battlefield and more about the keyboard. In some cases, the power of the Internet and modern computing has even made it possible to take effective military action without sending anyone into the field. So it kind of makes sense that the military’s whole “100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and run two miles inside of 10 minutes’’ requirement can take a step back. As it turns out, that’s also probably for the best because if it didn’t, the US Army might have some trouble with recruiting. According to the Army, only 3 out of every 10 Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 are eligible to join, and the rise of obesity is one of the leading reasons why. So what’s the military going to do? Be understanding, of course! “Maybe you’re not the Ranger who can do 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and run the 2-mile inside of 10 minutes, but you can crack a data system of an enemy,’’ one recruiter told Military.com. The relaxed standards should go perfectly with their new slogan: “Army of One (but you can have seconds if you’re good with computers).’’

Go Home GoPro, You’re Drunk

We apologize in advance for the Pitbull soundtrack, but please do your best to ignore that and pay attention to the brilliance of this video. GoPro’s are typically reserved for extreme sports and capturing footage of that time you were robbed at gun point, but if you’re creative, you can find cool ways to use a GoPro without putting your life in harms way. That’s what YouTube user “James C’’ did when he strapped his GoPro to a bottle of Fireball cinnamon whiskey and invited all the guests at Brian and Allie’s wedding to use a camera to take a different kind of shot. In about two minutes of footage, we get to watch people hit the bottle on a bus, while holding a beer, and while holding a baby. More importantly, Brian and Allie get to watch this wonderful keepsake of the time their loved ones came together to celebrate and get drunk off whiskey that tastes like toothpaste. Cherish the memories, you two!
