Gerry Callahan Has Thoughts About Terrorism and Welfare

Don’t worry, WEEI’s Gerry Callahan told Boston.com he was just making “a wise crack’’ when he appeared to link terrorists to welfare recipients.

On Thursday evening, the Boston Herald reported that a Stoughton man may be involved with ISIS, a vicious terrorist organization based in the Middle East that has claimed responsibility for beheading two American journalists in the last two weeks, including one from New Hampshire.

Ahmad Abousamra, who was already on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list, is alleged to be part of ISIS’s social media propaganda team.

The news did not escape Callahan’s attention, who tweeted the Boston Herald story and tweeted:

So ISIS’s top IT guy grew up here and learned his craft at UMass & Northeastern. Only surprise: Didn’t have EBT card

Did Callahan just compare being a terrorist to being on welfare? Or was he saying being on welfare makes you a terrorist?

Callahan explained via a direct message on Twitter to Boston.com’s News Editor that it was just “a wise crack.’’ He explained the tweet by saying that Abousamra has “just one less thing’’ in common with “our other favorite sons, the Tsarnaevs.’’

So there you go, it was all a joke. A super funny, not-at-all-offensive-to-the-poor-or-hungry, joke. Ha, ha.
