The 2025 Emmys will be held on Sunday at 8 p.m., with the telecast airing on CBS (and streaming on Paramount+).
The evening promises to award plenty of worthy winners, with major wins for “Severance,” “Adolescence,” and “The Studio” all but assured. In fact, most of the predicted winners (as selected by the awards experts over at Gold Derby) are ones that I consider pretty deserving.
But rather than focus on the positive and acknowledge that the Emmys got it mostly right for once, I’m going to highlight three nominees not expected to emerge triumphant Sunday night that I’m preemptively upset about.
Best Drama

I’m a huge “Severance” fan, but “Andor” is the best TV show of 2025. Tony Gilroy finally made a Star Wars project for adults to enjoy with his thrilling saga set in a galaxy far, far away that is nevertheless deeply relevant to the state of the world today.
Best Comedy
I’m not always a proponent of the “lifetime achievement” Emmy (i.e. giving an award to a long-running show in its final season), but “What We Do in the Shadows” deserves at least one, single, solitary Primetime Emmy for its six seasons of spooky silliness.
Best Actress (Drama)
There’s a chance Lower triumphs over Bates, making this preemptive tantrum look silly in retrospect. But in a just world, Lower’s carefully modulated performances as the “innie” and “outie” versions of the same woman would be the runaway favorite instead of merely an upset candidate.
Here’s a rapid-fire round of predictions for more of the major categories at the 2025 Emmys.
Best Actor (Drama)
Will win: Noah Wyle, “The Pitt”
Should win: Adam Scott, “Severance”

Press play on these movies and shows:
“Misery” (1990): With Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” hitting theaters this weekend, I decided to rank the horror maestro’s best film adaptations. The best of the bunch currently streaming is this Rob Reiner-directed horror-thriller, a dark, unsparing look at celebrity and fandom gone wrong. As the “No. 1 fan” of novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan), Kathy Bates won a deserved Best Actress Oscar as nurse turned captor Annie Wilkes. (HBO Max)

“Only Murders in the Building” (Season 5): The mystery-comedy has joined the parade of movies and shows needling notable billionaires, casting Christoph Waltz, Renée Zellweger, and Logan Lerman as a trio of villainous moguls that may or may not be inspired by real-life figures for its fifth season. (Hulu)
“The Great British Baking Show” (Season 16): As always, the 16th season of this long-running competition series pits 12 amateur bakers against each other in a fight to curry the favor of judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. “Pits” is the wrong word, though, as “GBBS” is a remarkably pleasant show in which the competitors help each other out and lift each other’s spirits, all in the service of producing show-stopping breads, cakes, tarts, and more. (Netflix)
