New Movies Streaming

‘Happy Gilmore 2′ (2025)

“Happy Gilmore 2,” the newly released Netflix sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 golf comedy, is a lot like its star: A little bit flabbier, a little bit shabbier, but still undeniably funny after all these years.

The legacyquel breezes through Happy’s career highlights in a short intro before putting the golfer with the heart of a hockey player back where he started the first film: Broke, angry, and at the end of his rope. Though the film occasionally loses steam due to a deluge of celebrity cameos, it provides exactly what Sandler fans want to see. (Read my full “Happy Gilmore 2” review here.)

How to watch: “Happy Gilmore 2” is streaming on Netflix.

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ (2025)

It seems like a portion of the moviegoing public has tuned out Wes Anderson, if the box office for his most recent effort, “The Phoenician Scheme,” is any indication.

That’s a shame, because “Phoenician Scheme” is yet another charming entry in the director’s filmography, about a 1950s tycoon (Benicio del Toro) and his efforts to reconcile with his daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton), who has left the lap of luxury behind for a higher calling as a nun. All of the Anderson hallmarks are there, but this film has a lighter touch than Anderson’s recent “Asteroid City,” thanks in large part to Threapleton.

New TV Shows Streaming

‘Ballard

Prime Video is returning to the “Bosch” well with a second spinoff of the hit series based on Michael Connelly’s Los Angeles crime novels. Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver) is nowhere to be found in this one, but LAPD Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) is cut from the same cloth as Bosch, doggedly pursuing a serial killer and a host of other criminal curiosities.

How to watch: “Ballard” is streaming on Prime Video.

‘The Hunting Wives’

If your weekend bingewatch of choice typically involves a soapy drama about wealthy women with secrets to hide, may I suggest “The Hunting Wives”? Set in the heart of Texas, the show concerns a recently transplanted couple from Cambridge, Mass., suffering a bit of culture shock.

Sophie (Brittany Snow) may be married to a snobby Harvard grad, but this humble UMass grad is a fish out of water in both geography and class. Luckily, a southern queen bee (Malin Akerman) takes her under her wing, at which point all of the typical diversions of a glossy soap — drinking, cheating, and a murder most foul — soon follow.

How to watch: “The Hunting Wives” is streaming on Netflix.

‘Untamed’

There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking about “Untamed,” a creepy crime drama that’s been sitting atop Netflix’s Top 10 list since its release last week. But the power of its cast (Eric Bana, Rosemarie DeWitt, Sam Neill) and the majestic setting of the grisly murder that animates the show (Yosemite National Park in California) are enough to make this six-episode series a worthy watch.

How to watch: “Untamed” is streaming on Netflix.
