If you were writing, directing, or performing in a romantic comedy in the ’90s, your guiding light was Julia Roberts. In Roger Michell’s “Notting Hill,” she gets a chance to play wish fulfillment for audiences, playing an A-List actress who is secretly down-to-earth and falls for a bookshop owner (Hugh Grant). The pair’s chemistry and comedic timing is sublime, selling the fairy tale story so well that you’ll be a believer when the credits roll.

“Pee-wee As Himself” is a fascinating object. The two-part HBO documentary is about the reclusive performer Paul Reubens, who almost always appeared in public as his Groundlings character, Pee-wee Herman. It’s clear throughout the documentary that Reubens is uncomfortable — both because he’s not in control of the project and he’s not in character.
But director Matt Wolf is patient and persistent, and the end result is a detail-rich documentary that finally lets the world see Reubens for who he was — a counter-culture icon, a man who struggled with his own identity, and a fundamentally decent human who entertained a generation.

Based on Peter Brown’s children’s books of the same name, “The Wild Robot” follows Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o), a task-oriented helper robot accidentally dropped onto a remote island inhabited only by wild animals. After unwittingly killing a mama goose during her initial descent, Roz’s new mission is to learn how to be a goose mom to the orphaned Brightbill, with an assist from some of the other woodland critters. “The Wild Robot” pulled in three Oscar nominations this week, for good reason: It’s the best of this year’s animated features.

FX’s “Adults” is an attempt to give Gen Z a sitcom about city-dwelling twentysomethings it can call its own, rather than bingeing reruns of “Friends” or “New Girl.” While it’s too early to say whether “Adults” will have the staying power of those shows, early signs are promising.
Rather than living in spacious Manhattan apartments they shouldn’t be able to afford a la “Friends,” these friends all live under one roof, at the house of Samir (Malik Elassal) in Queens. Viewers fresh out of college should relate to the gang, while those a bit older can look back fondly at the mess that was their early 20s.

Generation Z essentially grew up with “Big Mouth,” Netflix’s ribald animated comedy about puberty. The series, which just debuted its eighth and final season, features cartoon genitalia, masturbation jokes, and unspeakable acts involving sentient couch cushions and literal “hormone monsters.” It’s also extremely funny, and offers more honesty and compassion about sex education than you’ll find in most public schools.
Over eight seasons, the cast has grown by multitudes, but has remained focused on the core group of teens voiced by Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Dorchester native Ayo Edebiri (“The Secret Life of Pets”) and Nahant native Jason Mantzoukas. The characters have grown as well, and Kroll and co. give their hormone-addled characters a fitting farewell.
