It’s happening: After years of rumors, a spinoff of beloved TV series “The Office” has officially been picked up by NBC’s streaming service, Peacock.
Before you break out your Michael Scott “World’s Best Boss” mug for a celebratory toast, be aware that the upcoming series, from “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “Nathan For You” creator Michael Koman, features an entirely new cast and isn’t set in Scranton, Penn.
Instead, the connective tissue that makes the new show part of the “Office” universe is the documentary crew that filmed the employees of paper company Dunder Mifflin, according to a Peacock press release.
This time around, the film crew selects a dying Midwestern newspaper as its documentary subject.
“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters,” reads Peacock’s official synopsis of the new series.
Irish actor Domnhall Gleeson, known for his roles in the “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” film franchises, will star alongside Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus”), with filming for the “Office” spinoff starting in July.
“It’s been more than 10 years since the final episode of ‘The Office’ aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” said Lisa Katz, President, NBCUniversal Entertainment, in the press release. “In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
News of a spinoff of “The Office” first surfaced in September 2023, and Daniels has reportedly had a writers’ room up and running since January.
“The Office,” which aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013, has built a new generation of fans thanks to its streaming success, first on Netflix and now on its current streaming home, Peacock.
The show proved to be a launchpad for several Boston-area natives, in particular Acton native Steve Carell, Cambridge native Mindy Kaling, and Newton natives John Krasinski and B.J. Novak.
