It’s December, and the majority of New England ski resorts are open for skiing and riding. The weekend forecast is a mix, with potential for snow and freezing r-word for Saturday. Regardless, early season skiing sure beats being at the crowded mall.

Okemo has the most skiing in the East with 258 acres. Sunday River, Stratton, Mount Snow, Killington, Loon, Stowe and Sugarloaf are close behind in that order – all of these New England ski resorts have over 100 acres of skiing and riding.

This Saturday, Sugarloaf hosts Demo Days. Here is your chance to sample the latest gear from Volkl, Head, Nordica, Atomic, K2, Rossignol, Fischer, Salomon, Parlor, Burton, Blizzard, Icelantic and Lucid, for just $5. All these skis are sold at Sugarloaf’s Downhill Supply Center, so you can try before you buy if you are in the market for new skis or a board this winter. Stowe also hosts Mountainfest Demo Days Saturday December 6, from 9-3, ski, snowboard and telemark demos are free with a pass or lift ticket and credit card swipe.

Santa Sunday at Sunday River will put any bah humbug skier or boarder in the spirit as 250 Santas take to the slopes on Sunday, the 15th annual event. Santas preregistered earlier this week, donated locally, and dress accordingly to be part of the fun photo opp and score free ski tickets. Go see a sea of jolly red riders and skier at The River this Sunday.

The Pats don’t play until Sunday night so you have time to go skiing and still be back for game time après ski.
