Will lifts be running by the end of the weekend?

Maybe.

Now that New England is finally in line for more seasonable temperatures, local ski resorts will be firing up the snow guns in the immediate future, which means we could see the first local area open for lift-serviced skiing and riding within days.

Based on a forecast that called for lows below freezing on Friday and Saturday nights, Killington Mountain Resort is hoping to make snow over the two-day period, according to public relations manager Michael Joseph, but still has Opening Day plans in the air. Snow and sleet is in the forecast for Saturday, but with little accumulation expected.

Last year, Sunday River, in Newry, Maine, ran its lifts for the first time on the weekend of Oct. 26-27. The resort, which made headlines by making snow in September during a cold snap, will also see nighttime temps hovering around freezing over the next few days, which could lead to a snowmaking plan being implemented.

Joseph said a firmer plan on Killington’s opening would be known by the end of the week.
